Mercury Reduction Program

NEWMOA's Mercury Program supports state mercury reduction initiatives. For background information on environmental issues related to mercury, visit the Mercury Topic Hub™. The information resources available in the mercury area of the NEWMOA website are designed to help the NEWMOA and IMERC-Member states achieve their "virtual elimination" goal for mercury by focusing in particular on efforts to reduce or eliminate mercury from the waste stream. These resources include:

  • Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction Clearinghouse (IMERC): Provides links to the resources of the Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction Clearinghouse (IMERC). IMERC provides ongoing technical and programmatic assistance to states that have enacted mercury education and reduction legislation, and provides a single point of contact for industry and the public for information on mercury-containing products and member states' mercury education and reduction programs.

  • Mercury-Added Products Database: Provides a database that presents information submitted to IMERC on the amount and purpose of mercury in consumer products. The database is intended to inform consumers, companies, recyclers, policy makers, and others about: products that contain intentionally-added mercury, the amount of mercury in a specific product, the amount of mercury in a specific product line sold in the US in a given year, and manufacturers of mercury-added products.

  • Mercury Topic Hub™: Provides NEWMOA's five Hubs covering general mercury issues, mercury thermometers, mercury thermostats, mercury in dental clinics, and mercury in automobiles. The general Mercury Hub provides background on health effects, releases to the atmosphere, mercury in products, mercury in the environment, and fish advisories. It also covers the spectrum of assistance and regulatory approaches focused on mercury reduction, as well as federal, state, and local mercury reduction programs. The Mercury Thermometer, Mercury in Automobiles, and Mercury Thermostat Hubs cover collection and exchange programs, alternative products, handling, recycling, and disposal issues and spills. The Mercury in Dental Hub, provides a background and overview on this sector, outlines the resource inputs and outputs, outlines what drivers there are for changing from traditional behaviors and technologies, and what the P2 opportunities are for this sector.

  • Conferences, Workshops, & Meetings: Provides information on mercury conferences, workshops, and meetings hosted or co-sponsored by NEWMOA.

  • Mercury Links: Provides links to state and EPA websites with mercury information.

  • Mercury Projects: Provides information on NEWMOA's projects to: promote fluorescent lamp recycling; identify and remove elemental mercury and products containing mercury from schools and homes; help find mercury reduction programs underway around the U.S. through a searchable database that includes a brief description of the project, its title, list of products affected, program results, sources of funding, and contact information.

  • Publications: Provides a list and access to all of NEWMOA's publications on mercury and mercury-related topics.

  • Workgroups: Provides a list of NEWMOA's Mercury Workgroups and their members.

  • Calendar: Find out about mercury events taking place in the Northeast and nationally.
