Health Effects of PFAS Mixtures

March 2, 2021 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Note: This webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members.

The webinar included the following presentations:

Dr. Jennifer Schlezinger, Boston University School of Public Health presented PFOA Induces Liver and Serum Dyslipidemia in a Humanized PPAR(alpha) Mouse Model Fed an American Diet. Despite evidence that human PFAS exposure is associated with dyslipidemia, these effects of PFAS have received little toxicological research focus, largely because there is no suitable animal model. To address this, we developed a new model, mice expressing human peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) fed a diet based on the “What we eat in America.” The presentation outlined the studies and their findings.

Greylin Nielsen, Boston University School of Public Health presented Approaches to Modeling and Interpreting the Health Effects of PFAS Mixtures. State, federal, and international regulatory bodies have taken different approaches to regulating PFAS mixtures in drinking water and other exposure sources. These strategies were discussed in the context of in vitro and in vivo toxicity studies of PFAS mixtures with a focus on designing in vitro studies that can augment regulatory efforts.
