Soil Mixing for Environmental Remediation: An Effective Tool for Challenging Sites

August 13, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

The webinar included the following presentations:

Daniel Ruffing, Geo-Solutions, Inc [PDF]

Chris Robb, Geosyntec Consultants [PDF]

Darin Payne, Geo-Solutions, Inc [PDF]

Environmental remediation of recalcitrant compounds, such as chlorinated solvents, can be very challenging, especially in tight lithologies or other geologic situations. Soil mixing is a method of delivering reagents, air, or steam to the subsurface to enhance contact with the contaminated soil/groundwater and can limit contaminant rebound. Soil mixing can be a cost effective method for in-situ remediation via treatment (i.e., oxidation, reduction) or stabilization/solidification of numerous waste types, including coal tar at former manufactured gas plant (MGP) or wood treating sites, and also for treating chlorinated solvents, for stabilizing metals, and for stripping volatile contaminants. The webinar provided an overview of the soil mixing technique, design and long-term monitoring considerations, and case studies to reinforce the applicability of soil mixing for remediation.
