Investigating AFFF Use at a Regional Airport [PDF]

Maine and Vermont conducted site investigations to understand the prevelance of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment at locations where drinking water was impacted above health advisories or standards.

Kerri Malinowski, ME DEP presented on the investigation of PFAS in the environment and its impact on a dairy farm, including the cycle of reintroduction from hay grown on a field to the milk and manure of cows fed the hay and back onto the field through fertilization with the manure.

Michael Nahmias, VT DEC presented a case study from a small regional airport, the Southern Vermont Regional Airport in Clarendon, Vermont. The Airport has a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 139 Operating Certificate and the presentation outlined how this relates to ongoing requirements to use AFFF. The presentation included the results of the site investigaiton, observations, management approaches, and lessons learned, including some of the challenges associated with completing a site investigation at an active airport.
