SUMMARY:Risk Communication– Strategies for Preparing to Speak with the Public with a Focus on Emerging Contaminants
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states\, and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nPresenter: Jenny Phillips\, Director Technical Development Unit\, TRC Companies \nView Jenny’s Presentation [PDF] \nCommunications regarding emerging contaminants such as per- and poly-fluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) adds several challenges to an already challenging practice. The goal of risk communication is to simply and clearly present information to interested parties regarding the potential for adverse risk and potential exposures\, and also to listen. The objective of this presentation was to discuss the common challenges in communicating risk effectively and provide some suggestions which can create opportunity to build trust and set a path forward of cooperation. Through use of some key tools\, risk communication and its acceptance by the public and stakeholders can be greatly improved. Key tools for discussion include: 1) determination of key messages 2) relationship building to earn and gain trust 3) do the work\, understand the target audiences and 4) be open about what you know and what you don’t know. \n

SUMMARY:Anaerobic Digestion and Other Solutions for Wasted Food
DESCRIPTION:NERC/NEWMOA Four Part Webinar Series\n\nWebinar 1: Anaerobic Digestion and Other Solutions for Wasted Food \nDive into the different solutions for eliminating wasted food from landfills while learning about EPA’s Wasted Food Scale and the different methods for sustainable food management during our webinar Anaerobic Digestion and Other Solutions for Wasted Food.   \nThis webinar will cover wasted food prevention\, donation\, composting\, and then delve into Anaerobic Digestion (AD) and how it works. EPA estimates that more than 76 billion pounds of food waste reaches landfills and incinerators annually. Furthermore\, EPA estimates that although total emissions from municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills are decreasing\, methane emissions from landfilled wasted food are increasing.   \nView the presentation slides [PDF] \n \nSponsor\n \nSpeakers\nStephanie Frisch\, NEWMOA Project Manager\n \nStephanie manages the High Priority Chemicals Database System (HPCDS) and supports a variety of solid waste initiatives\, including projects on PFAS in consumer products\, plastic waste reduction and recycling\, and food waste management. Prior to joining NEWMOA\, Stephanie worked in research surveying wildlife population health and in antibiotic discovery. Stephanie holds a B.S. in Environmental Science\, Biology and Conservation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \nJohn Fay\, NEWMOA Project Manager\n \nJohn is the lead for NEWMOA’s Solid Waste initiatives and the project manager for the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse. Over the past 25 years\, John has run programs for solid waste districts in Vermont\, consulted on solid waste issues\, run commercial-scale compost facilities\, operated household hazardous waste facilities\, taught middle school science\, and served as an environmental analyst for the Vermont DEC. John holds an M.S. in Resource Management and Administration from Antioch University New England. \nMary Ann Remolador\, Assistant Director of the Northeast Recycling Council\, Inc. (NERC).\n \nMary Ann has been with NERC for the past 29 years.
