SUMMARY:PFAS in Water: Removal\, Treatment\, & Destruction
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states\, and and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Charles Schaefer\, CDM Smith [PDF] presented Removal & Destruction of PFAS in Water. The presentation will discuss removal of PFAS from surface and groundwaters using granular activated carbon (GAC) and anion exchange resins (AERs)\, including impacts of water geochemistry and co-contaminants on effectiveness\, and potential secondary water impacts. Application of electrochemical oxidation for PFAS destruction in brines used for AER regeneration was also examined. \nDr. Michelle Crimi\, Clarkson University [PDF] presented Optimization of Regenerable Ion-Exchange for PFAS Groundwater Treatment – Outcomes from Two SERDP & ESTCP Projects. The presentation summarized work on two DoD projects funded by SERDP and ESTCP to develop and validate a treatment train approach for managing PFAS-contaminated water. PFAS are first concentrated onto a regenerable ion exchange resin. The resin regenerated for its reuse and the PFAS are separated from the regenerant solution allowing it to also be reused. PFAS in the highly concentrated residue are then destroyed by plasma treatment. The team from Clarkson\, Texas Tech\, ECT2\, Wood\, and NAVFAC are working to optimize each step and is currently validating performance at Pease Air National Guard Base.

SUMMARY:Environmental Benefits Calculators: How They Work & How They Can Help
DESCRIPTION:Joint Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) and NEWMOA webinar on environmental benefits calculators that can demonstrate the climate change value of source reduction\, reuse\, and recycling. Featured calculators included: \n\nWARM [PDF] – a tool for solid waste planners and organizations that tracks and voluntarily reports greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions\, energy savings\, and economic impacts from different waste management practices. WARM calculates and totals these impacts from baseline and alternative waste management practices—source reduction\, recycling\, anaerobic digestion\, combustion\, composting\, and landfilling.\nReCon [PDF] – companies\, government entities\, and individuals can estimate the environmental impacts from purchasing and/or manufacturing materials with varying degrees of post-consumer recycled content.\nReFed [PDF] – food waste reduction impact calculator.\nElectronics Environmental Benefits Calculators [PDF] – tool to estimate the impacts of cellphones\, monitors\, computers\, televisions\, servers\, and imaging equipment.\n\nWebinar: View the recorded presentation \nAdditional links and resources can be found here.

SUMMARY:Lithium Battery Recycling
DESCRIPTION:The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)\, Northeast Recycling Council (NERC)\, and NEWMOA joined together to organize this webinar. The presentations provided an in-depth examination of multiple aspects of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)\, including innovations that reduce the environmental impacts of operations in recycling\, reuse\, and recovery of valuable materials. The presenters included: \nDr. Yan Wang\, William Smith Foundation Dean’s Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute\, on “The Challenges and Opportunities of Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling” [PDF] \nDr. Chao Yan\, CEO\, Princeton NuEnergy Inc. on “Innovations in Lithium-ion Battery Recycling: Fewer Emissions\, Less Energy Use\, and Lower Cost” [PDF] \nDr. Wen Zhang\, Associate Professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology on “Extraction of Lithium and Cobalt from Spent LIBs and Waste Prevention” [PDF] \nWebinar: View the recorded presentation

SUMMARY:The Spectrum of Approaches to U.S. Packaging EPR: From Reimbursement to Full Responsibility
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar was co-organized by NEWMOA\, the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI)\, and the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC). As extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation for packaging and paper products (PPP) gains momentum in the U.S.\, many different approaches have emerged. This webinar summarized the spectrum of EPR models\, from “Full EPR” systems run by producers to “Municipal Reimbursement” systems with more municipal control\, and many hybrid structures. PSI [PDF] presented an overview of the emerging EPR for PPP models and shared lessons learned from around the world about the pros and cons of each approach. Then\, experts from New York [PDF]\, Vermont [PDF]\, and Maryland [PDF] shared insights into why each state has taken a distinct approach to EPR for PPP. \nWebinar: View the recorded presentation

SUMMARY:PFAS Air Emissions: Impacts to Groundwater & Stack Testing
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states\, and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nCatherine Beahm\, New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) [PDF] presented a case study where air emissions from a coating facility effected a large area\, including impacts to groundwater. The presentation also outlined New Hampshire’s regulatory authority to protect groundwater from the effects of air emissions and how DES is implementing it. \nWesley Fritz\, Weston Solutions [PDF] presented Innovative Sampling & Analysis Techniques for Stack Sampling of PFAS Air Emissions from Stationary Sources. He covered practical experiences with stack sampling for PFAS at chemical manufacturing\, coating operations\, sewage sludge incineration\, and carbon regeneration facilities using sampling methods developed in collaboration with a partnering laboratory. These methods formed the basis for EPA’s Draft PFAS stack sampling method OTM-45. Sources tested include the inlets and outlets of air pollution devices\, including carbon beds\, wet scrubbers\, and thermal oxidizers. \n \n
