SUMMARY:Understanding Usability of PFAS Data
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentation: \nUnderstanding Usability of PFAS Data [PDF]\nDr. Nancy Rothman\, Chief Executive Officer\, New Environmental Horizons\, Inc.\nElizabeth Denly\, Quality Assurance & Chemistry Director\, TRC \nIt is well understood that the analysis of PFAS is being performed using liquid chromatography/dual mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Currently\, the majority of laboratories are utilizing a modified version of EPA method 537\, which was designed for drinking water samples. EPA is in the process of developing methods for non-drinking water matrices but these methods are not yet available. There is no consistency in the laboratory community with regards to the modifications that are implemented\, how the samples are prepared\, quality control procedures\, and whether or not sample cleanups are performed. Data users need to understand the modifications laboratories are implementing or not implementing in order to determine whether data quality objectives are being achieved. \nThe presentation provided training on how to assess PFAS data and will provide the data user with appropriate sampling and method information to communicate effectively with a laboratory to obtain PFAS data that meets their project needs. Additionally\, the presentation provided training on the impact of Quality Control (QC) issues including assessment of method and matrix QC results on PFAS data. With this information\, data users will be able to evaluate the information they receive to determine the accuracy\, precision\, and ultimate usability of their PFAS data.

SUMMARY:In-situ Treatment of PFAS in Groundwater
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Fiona Laramay\, AECOM [PDF] presented In Situ Treatment of PFAS- Contaminated Groundwater. Remediation of groundwater contaminated with PFAS has been challenging due to exceptional recalcitrance of these compounds. Emerging technologies for remediation include ultrasound. The presentation discussed fundamentals of the technology and applications in groundwater remediation. \nMaureen Dooley\, Regenisis [PDF] presented Colloidal Activated Carbon for In- situ Remediation of PFAS: A Review of Multiple Case Studies. The presentation reviewed data from multiple field sites where an in-situ barrier of colloidal activated carbon has been utilized to remediate PFAS contamination.

SUMMARY:Destroying PFAS in Groundwater & Landfill Leachate
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necesssaily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states\, and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nRebecca Mora & Dr. Shangtao Liang\, AECOM [PDF] presented Coupling Regenerable Ion Exchange Resin (IXR) with Electrochemical Oxidation (EO) for Onsite Separation & Destruction of PFAS in Groundwater. With limited disposal options for PFAS-impacted remediation-derived wastes (e.g.\, spent media and concentrated waste streams)\, the focus of PFAS treatment technology development has shifted from separation/sorption technologies to combining separation/sorption and destruction technologies. The objectives of this project were to remove PFAS from contaminated groundwater using regenerable IXR and demonstrate on-site EO destruction of PFAS in the concentrated waste. An overview of laboratory and field testing was shared. \nIvan Cooper\, Civil & Environmental Consultants [PDF] presented Innovative Destruction Technologies for PFAS in Groundwater & Leachate. Conventional destruction and disposal technologies for PFAS-impacted groundwater and leachate include activated carbon and ion exchange followed by thermal treatment\, as well as reverse osmosis with reject flow management. Lower cost management technologies are being investigated. Alternative adsorption technologies that provide longer media life and simpler disposal management\, including modified bentonite\, are starting to be used. Research for a range of other technologies is under investigation and will be presented with stage of development. Case examples of innovation were discussed.
