SUMMARY:PFAS in Surface Water\, Fish\, & Shellfish
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Ronald MacGillivray\, Delaware River Basin Commission [PDF] presented PFAS in Surface Water & Fish from the Delaware River. The presentation discussed data on number of different PFAS sampled over a 15-year period (2004 to 2018) in fish fillet and surface water in tidal and non-tidal segments of the Delaware River. During the period\, actions were taken to reduce or eliminate the release of certain PFAS to the environment and observed trends were presented. \nMichael Murphy\, Wood [PDF] presented Investigation & Health Risk Screening for PFAS In Surface Water & Shellfish at Former Air Force Base. The presentation presented the results of an Expanded Site Investigation of PFAS migration pathways and potential human exposure media (surface water\, sediment\, and shellfish) associated with PFAS releases to groundwater and surface water associated with use of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) at a former Air Force Base. A human health risk screening was conducted and the results were used to inform additional identification of potential human exposure scenarios and to develop the Remedial Investigation Work Plan.

SUMMARY:PFAS Uses & Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necesssaily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nLiz Harriman\, Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute [PDF] presented PFAS: Avoiding Regrettable Substitutes. PFAS have a myriad of uses\, and reducing or eliminating PFAS at the source often requires substituting another material or chemical. The presentation gave an overview of the range of PFAS chemicals\, examine selected uses and discuss approaches for moving to safer alternatives. \nMike Schade\, Safer Chemicals\, Healthy Families Mind the Store Campaign [PDF] presented Phasing-out PFAS in Food Packaging at Top Grocery and Fast-food Chains. The presentation outlined where PFAS has been found in the food packaging at top grocery and quick-service restaurant chains\, and how advocates have driven major food retailers to adopt public commitments to phase-out and ban PFAS in food contact materials. Information about resources identifying alternatives and policy recommendations for grocery stores and quick-service restaurant chains was shared.

SUMMARY:PFAS: Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF) & Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necesssaily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Raj Singh\, Clarkson University [PDF] presented What is Really in Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) & Does it Matter? According to the EPA\, currently available industrial formulations of C6 AFFF should be free from long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs). However\, researchers at Clarkson characterized four different C6 AFFF foams and found they contain noticeable concentrations of long-chain PFAAs and/or precursors that can transform to long-chain PFAAs upon oxidation. The presentation outlined the research project and findings. \nKate Winnebeck\, New York Pollution Prevention Institute [PDF] presented PFAS in Firefighting Foam: Summary & Comparison of Performance Specifications\, Fluorine Free Foams\, & Research Needs. The presentation provided an overview of the PFAS in Firefighting Foam report published in April 2019\, including: AFFF performance specifications and how they handle PFAS; the process used to identify fluorine-free foams; how to access the report; and information gaps to characterizing fluorine free foams \nNick Child\, Massachusetts DEP [PDF] presented State Efforts to Address PFAS in AFFF used for Firefighting. Massachusetts DEP and Connecticut DEEP have recognized the PFAS issues associated with AFFF. Both states are taking the following actions: 1) conducting a state-funded takeback and disposal program for AFFF; 2) working with fire departments that use AFFF to assess the PFAS issue\, and 3) conducting analytical analysis of several currently available fluorine-free foams (F3) alternatives. The presentation outlined these efforts and the findings.
