SUMMARY:Health Effects of PFAS Mixtures
DESCRIPTION:Note: This webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Jennifer Schlezinger\, Boston University School of Public Health presented PFOA Induces Liver and Serum Dyslipidemia in a Humanized PPAR(alpha) Mouse Model Fed an American Diet. Despite evidence that human PFAS exposure is associated with dyslipidemia\, these effects of PFAS have received little toxicological research focus\, largely because there is no suitable animal model. To address this\, we developed a new model\, mice expressing human peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) fed a diet based on the “What we eat in America.” The presentation outlined the studies and their findings. \nGreylin Nielsen\, Boston University School of Public Health presented Approaches to Modeling and Interpreting the Health Effects of PFAS Mixtures. State\, federal\, and international regulatory bodies have taken different approaches to regulating PFAS mixtures in drinking water and other exposure sources. These strategies were discussed in the context of in vitro and in vivo toxicity studies of PFAS mixtures with a focus on designing in vitro studies that can augment regulatory efforts.

SUMMARY:Perspectives on a Class Approach to PFAS
DESCRIPTION:Note: This webinar was presented for informational purposes. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of each of the NEWMOA-member states and should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThe webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. David Andrews\, Environmental Working Group (EWG) [PDF] presented A Case for Managing PFAS as a Chemical Class to Protect Public Health. PFAS occur in complex mixtures within products\, the environment\, and people and yet the current regulatory approach focuses on a single chemical at a time. The full extent of PFAS contamination around the country has been hindered by limited public information available on just a small subset of these chemicals. The presentation discussed the public health perspective and a recent co-authored publication in ES&T Letters\, “Scientific Basis for Managing PFAS as a Chemical Class”. \nDr. Simona Balan\, California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) [PDF] presented Regulating PFAS as a Chemical Class Under the California Safer Consumer Products Program. California DTSC\, which runs the state’s innovative Safer Consumer Products program\, has been researching and engaging with stakeholders regarding PFAS in consumer products since early 2016. Rather than focusing on individual PFAS\, DTSC has taken a chemical class approach\, which can help promote the development of safer alternatives and avoid further regrettable substitutions. The presentation explained California’s Safer Consumer Products regulatory framework and the rationale behind DTSC’s decision to regulate certain consumer products containing any member of the PFAS class.

SUMMARY:PFAS: A Case Study in Maine - Including Plant Uptake in Corn & Hay
DESCRIPTION:The webinar included the following presentation: \nAndy Smith and Tom Simones\, Maine Department of Health & Human Services [PDF] presented about a dairy farm in Maine including: \n\nContext – how the farm presented and how this led to work to derive soil screening levels for a soil-to-hay/corn-to-milk-to-child exposure pathway\nUse of a modified EPA Preliminary Remedial Goals for Radionuclides equation as the exposure model\nInputs for the model – from the literature\, EPA defaults\, dairy farm scenarios (grass-based versus more typical)\nPilot studies with Maine DEP of plant uptake by hay and corn\, comparisons to literature\, and confirmation of plant results by FDA\nMaine’s milk action level for PFOS\nResulting soil screening levels and how they compare to others\nHow the model has performed when we run to estimate soil levels based on observed milk levels at three farms
