SUMMARY:Teaching Practical Strategies for Reducing Wasted Food Through Community Events
DESCRIPTION:ReCook Cafes\, cooking workshops\, and similar events are emerging as fun and effective ways to help residents learn about practical strategies for reducing wasted food. They also help to build and strengthen communities. This webinar shared the experiences in New York State and Vermont with planning and holding these kinds of events and the key results and lessons learned. Presenters included Gary Feinland\, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; Anne Bijur\, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation; and Jesse Evin Kerns\, Syracuse University Center for Sustainable Community Solutions. \nAnne Bijur Slides \nAnne Bijur Handout with Recipes & Worksheet \nJesse Kerns’ Slides \nJesse Kerns’ Handout on “Tips for Being Wise with Food” \nJesse Kerns’ Handout on “Recipes” \nGary Feinland’s Slides

SUMMARY:Soil Mixing for Environmental Remediation: An Effective Tool for Challenging Sites
DESCRIPTION:The webinar included the following presentations: \nDaniel Ruffing\, Geo-Solutions\, Inc [PDF] \nChris Robb\, Geosyntec Consultants [PDF] \nDarin Payne\, Geo-Solutions\, Inc [PDF] \nEnvironmental remediation of recalcitrant compounds\, such as chlorinated solvents\, can be very challenging\, especially in tight lithologies or other geologic situations. Soil mixing is a method of delivering reagents\, air\, or steam to the subsurface to enhance contact with the contaminated soil/groundwater and can limit contaminant rebound. Soil mixing can be a cost effective method for in-situ remediation via treatment (i.e.\, oxidation\, reduction) or stabilization/solidification of numerous waste types\, including coal tar at former manufactured gas plant (MGP) or wood treating sites\, and also for treating chlorinated solvents\, for stabilizing metals\, and for stripping volatile contaminants. The webinar provided an overview of the soil mixing technique\, design and long-term monitoring considerations\, and case studies to reinforce the applicability of soil mixing for remediation.

SUMMARY:Vapor Intrusion Assessment: Guidelines\, Data Collection Methods\, & Advancements
DESCRIPTION:The webinar included the following presentations: \nLaurent Levy\, Jacobs [PDF] After briefly introducing vapor intrusion concepts\, the presentation provided a review of current guidelines issued by the U.S. states to address assessment of the vapor intrusion pathway with a focus on TCE\, PCE\, attenuation factors (in residential/commercial settings)\, petroleum vapor intrusion\, and sampling expectations. \nDavid Shea\, Sanborn Head & Associates [PDF] provided an overview of VI pathway assessment methods\, from conventional sampling techniques to advancements in data collection\, such as real-time field screening\, building pressure control\, passive sampling\, and guided sampling.
