SUMMARY:PFAS: Sampling Challenges in the Field & Michigan's Industrial Pre-treatment Program Initiative Webinar
DESCRIPTION:This webinar included the following presentations: \nJon Russell\, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality\nMichigan’s IPP PFAS Initiative [PDF] – and a listing of MI DEQ PFAS online resources [PDF] \nElizabeth Denly\, TRC\nPFAS Sampling Challenges [PDF] – note: some of the slides presented on the webinar are not included in this posted version. \nJon Russell\, Field Operations Section\, Water Resources Division\, Michigan DEQ. Mr. Russell is the Water Resources Division lead with the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) and presented on Michigan’s Industrial Pre-treatment Program (IPP) PFAS Initiative. In February 2018\, the MI DEQ launched the IPP PFAS Initiative\, requiring all municipal wastewater treatment plants with required IPPs to find out whether they may be passing through PFOS and/or PFOA to surface waters and reduce and eliminate any sources if found. The MDEQ is working closely with municipal and industry groups to reduce and eliminate or control sources of PFOS and PFOA as they are found. Jon presented an overview of the IPP PFAS Initiative and its findings\, including their work on biosolids management. \nElizabeth Denly\, ASQ CMQ/OE\, Quality Assurance & Chemistry Director\, TRC presented PFAS Sampling Challenges in the Field. The potential for cross-contamination becomes even more crucial with PFAS than other chemicals because the regulatory criteria for PFAS are in the parts per trillion (ppt)/nanograms per liter (ng/L) range.  Ms. Denly addressed the rules for sampling PFAS in different media and recommendations for proper field quality control (QC) requirements. In addition\, she presented the results of a study performed by TRC and Alpha Analytical on the different PFAS constituents that can be transferred from common sampling materials and the relative concentrations of these PFAS in each of the tested materials.

SUMMARY:PFAS: Vermont's Soil Background Study & Transformation of Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances in the Environment
DESCRIPTION:The webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Wenyu Zhu\, University of Vermont\nPFAS Surface Soil Background Study [PDF] – note: this file is large (>20MB)] – and link to the report\, PFAS Background in Vermont Shallow Soils [PDF] \nDr. Jennifer Field\, Oregon State University\nFate – Biotransformation [PDF] – slides excerpted from an Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council (ITRC) presentation \nDr. Field referenced several articles during Q&A:\n– Will Backe’s paper that shows our analysis of 3M AFFF (Table S6) and fluorotelomer AFFF (Table S5).  The fluorotelomer species have only linear chains.\n– In the article by Buck on p. 19 \, there are branched PFCSs made by a variation of the telomer process. This telomer processes\, which results in C9\, C11\, and C13 PFCAs\, may be used in only some applications – for example\, I have not seen an AFFF enriched in these odd number long-chain PFCAs.\n– For landfill leachate composition\, refer to Table 2  in the reference from Allred\, B.M.\, Lang\, J.R.\, Barlaz\, M.A.\, Field\, J.A. 2014.  Orthogonal zirconium diol/C18 LC-MS/MS analysis of poly and perfluoroalkyl substances in landfill leachate.  J Chromatography A\, 1359\, 202-211.  Copyrighted by Elsevier \nWenyu Zhu\, Post Doctorial Associate\, University of Vermont presented the results of a surface soil background study conducted by the University of Vermont and Sanborn\, Head\, and Associates\, with support from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Surface soil samples were collected from 66 locations across Vermont in the summer of 2018 and analyzed for 17 PFAS compounds. Dr. Zhu will present the project activities and methodologies\, the analytical results\, and next steps. \nDr. Jennifer Field\, Professor\, Oregon State University presented on the biological transformation of poly-fluoroalkyl substances in the environment – what we know we know and what we know we don’t know. Dr. Field is an internationally recognized expert and her PFAS research interests are particularly focused on AFFF and on landfill leachate.
