SUMMARY:PFAS Treatment & Remediation Options
DESCRIPTION:This webinar included the following presentations: \nDr. Michelle Crimi\, Clarkson University\nTreatment Options for Soil and Groundwater [PDF] \nDr. Eric Dickenson\, Southern Nevada Water Authority\nTreatment Mitigation Strategies for Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Chemicals [PDF] \nRichard Spiese\, Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation\nLessons Learned on Vermont POET Installations and Operations for Residences Impacted by PFASs [PDF] \nThe webinar covered: \n\nRemediation & treatment options for environmental media\, including soil & groundwater\nTreatment options for drinking water\, including municipal & homeowner systems\nLessons learned\n\nPoly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of chemicals that have been used in numerous consumer and industrial processes due to their oil and water resistant properties and their exceptional stability. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are two of the most common PFAS found in the environment and in the human body. PFAS have been widely used in many applications\, including for carpet and fabric protection\, in food packaging\, and in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) used for firefighting. \nThe same properties that make PFAS so useful make them challenging to remove from soil and water\, including drinking water supplies. Remediation and treatment to meet EPA’s 70 ppt drinking water guideline is difficult.

SUMMARY:Promoting Strategies to Increase Reuse & Recycling of Bulky Wastes
DESCRIPTION:Bulky wastes include furniture\, carpet\, mattresses\, and such large rigid plastic items as kiddie swimming pools and play structures. During 2015 and 2016\, NEWMOA collaborated with waste management authorities and a variety of stakeholders in four rural areas in Maine\, Massachusetts\, and Vermont to develop effective strategies to reuse and recycle these items. This webinar presented the results of the Project\, including lessons learned and next steps. \nThe PPT slides and a Recording from the Webinar are available.
