SUMMARY:Mercury Products: Current Uses & Trends in Stewardship Programs
DESCRIPTION:During the webinar\, Rachel Smith\, IMERC Coordinator\, presented the results of IMERC’s 2013 Mercury-Added Product Data Analysis for targeted product categories\, emphasizing the current trends in mercury use\, as well as some unknowns. \nSuna Bayrakal\, Senior Associate from the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) discussed current and proposed product stewardship programs for mercury-added thermostats\, lamps\, and auto switches. \nThis webinar was intended for federal\, state\, and local government programs\, academic institutions\, and non-governmental organizations. \nA Recording of the webinar is available. PPT presentations are also available in PDF format below. \n\nCurrent Uses and Trends in Mercury-Added Products – IMERC\nMercury Product Stewardship Programs – PSI\n\n

SUMMARY:Understanding PFAS Fate & Transport
DESCRIPTION:This webinar included the following presentation: \nDave Woodward\, Director of Remediation Technology\, AECOM\nDr. Erika Houtz\, Project Engineer\, Arcadis\nJeff Burdick\, Senior Vice President\, Arcadis \nUnderstanding PFAS Fate & Transport [PDF] \nThe webinar covered: \n\nBackground\, including: basic characteristics\, historic uses & types of sources\, recent news\, & regulatory developments\nAtmospheric transport of volatile PFAS\nSubsurface transport & retardation of PFAS in groundwater\nAbiotic & biological transformation of precursors/polyfluorinated compounds\nFour case studies of PFAS fate & transport at real PFAS-impacted sites:\n\nfire training areas\nmanufacturing sources with multiple release pathways\nlandfarming of PFAS-impacted manufacturing waste\n\n\n\nPoly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of chemicals that have been used in numerous consumer and industrial processes due to their oil and water resistant properties and their exceptional stability. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are two of the most common PFAS found in the environment and in the human body. PFAS have been widely used in many applications\, including for carpet and fabric protection\, in food packaging\, and in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) used for firefighting. \nPFAS are a diverse compound class\, so they possess a range of fate and transport properties that depend heavily on the individual compound(s) in question. Understanding fate and transport at a particular site is also dependent on the source(s) of their release to the environment and the specific hydrogeologic and other physical and chemical conditions present.
