DESCRIPTION:Disclaimer: This webinar is presented for informational purposes only. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of any of the NEWMOA member states\, and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThank you to those of you who were able to join us for a webinar on PFAS Visualization Case Studies for Site Characterization\, Remediation\, and Forensics. This session explored practical methods and real-world case studies for visualizing complex PFAS datasets to support site characterization\, remediation\, and forensic assessments. Visualization approaches demonstrated during the webinar focused on evaluating multispecies PFAS inter-relationships to characterize relative source contributions within commingled plumes; comparing site concentrations to background levels in soil and groundwater; assessing lines of evidence for precursor transformation to PFAA end products; interpreting TOP assay results; evaluating relative attenuation trends along flow paths; and monitoring remediation performance. \nThis session featured a presentation from Grant Carey\, Ph.D.\, President of Porewater Solutions. Dr. Carey has more than 30 years of experience in PFAS fate and transport\, site characterization and remediation\, environmental forensics\, and groundwater modeling. He is currently involved in multiple SERDP and ESTCP projects for the U.S. Department of Defense focused on PFAS remediation and is a co-developer of the Visual PFAS™ software demonstrated during the webinar. Dr. Carey also serves as an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto. \nPlease use the links below to access the full webinar recording and supporting materials shared during the session.\n\nResources\n• Session Recording [MP4] \n• Slide Deck [PDF] \n• Speaker Biography [PDF] \n• Visual PFAS Software [External Link]\n• Heat Matrix Template [PPTX]

SUMMARY:Delving into the PFAS Analytical Data
DESCRIPTION:Disclaimer: This webinar is presented for informational purposes only. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of any of the NEWMOA member states\, and the strategies and technologies discussed should not be considered an endorsement by NEWMOA or its members. \nThank you to those of you who were able to join us for a webinar on Delving into the PFAS Analytical Data. This session examined common issues associated with PFAS analytical results provided in Level 2 laboratory data packages and discussed the implications of using summarized data for decision-making without review of laboratory raw data. Drawing on examples identified through deeper Level 4 data review\, the presentation highlighted data anomalies that can affect reported PFAS detections and concentrations\, including issues related to isomer integration\, calibration standards\, confirmation ions\, ion ratios\, and internal standards. \nThis session featured a presentation from Elizabeth Denly\, PFAS Initiative Leader and Chemistry Director at TRC. In this role\, Liz is responsible for providing QA/QC oversight in support of a variety of environmental investigations\, including risk-based soil cleanups\, remediation programs\, delineation\, contaminant ambient air monitoring\, and human health and ecological risk assessments. She currently works on many different types of PFAS investigations with a specific focus on chemistry\, forensics\, sampling procedures\, QA/QC\, and laboratory analytical methodologies\, and has played a significant role in educating clients\, attorneys\, and regulators about PFAS. \nPlease use the links below to access the full webinar recording and supporting materials from the session.\n\nResources\n• Session Recording [MP4] \n• Slide Deck [PDF]

SUMMARY:Materials Management 101: Waste Characterization Studies
DESCRIPTION:Waste Characterization Studies\nFor years\, state environmental agencies have been using waste characterization studies to better understand the waste stream in their state. The results of these studies can be a powerful tool to drive policy priorities and legislative action. Also\, recent EPA funding has allowed states who haven’t historically funded waste characterization studies to conduct them for the first time. \nWhat is a waste characterization study? What do they tell us? How do they get all that data? Why is it an important tool for states? How are they used? Join us as a leading expert and seasoned state agency officials explain waste characterization studies and provide real world policy stemming from the results. \nJohn Culbertson is a Principal of MSW Consultants\, a management consulting firm specializing in recycling\, organics\, and waste management. With 31 years of industry experience\, John has designed\, performed and managed waste characterization studies from Alaska to Maine to the Florida Keys and everywhere in between. \nJohn Fischer is Deputy Division Director for Solid Waste at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). \nDavid McLaughlin is a Program Services Officer at the State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management focused on sustainability initiatives for materials management\, renewable energy\, and prevention pollution. \nVIEW PRESENTATION SLIDES [PDF] \n \n

SUMMARY:Materials Management 101: Chemical Recycling
DESCRIPTION:You may have been hearing about chemical recycling as a bold new approach to recycling plastics. What are the types of “chemical recycling” and how do they work? Will they help us toward a circular economy\, or not? How will states need to approach regulating them? We will hear from state and NGO experts to give us a broad perspective on this emerging industry. \nMike Fowler of the New Jersey DEP\, has been studying the science of chemical recycling for several years and has recently authored an LCA with the Department. \nMaria Doa of the Environmental Defense Fund\, has expertise on the potential for toxicity and environmental impacts of material manufacturing and processing. \nTom Metzner of the Connecticut DEEP\, has years of experience implementing state policy\, navigating the space between the Legislature and the regulated community.\n \n \nVIEW PRESENTATION SLIDES [PDF] \n \n

SUMMARY:Materials Management 101: Flow Control
DESCRIPTION:Flow Control\nToday’s webinar is on Flow Control for solid waste. Flow control laws dictate that any waste generated in a geographical area has to go to a certain place. Since local governments are responsible for ensuring that waste is managed through an effective and reliable system\, in some cases flow control may be needed to achieve that goal. On the other hand\, we have the Interstate Commerce Clause that requires a level playing field for commerce\, which includes waste disposal. This webinar will investigate the history of flow control\, cover the landmark cases in New York and New Jersey that have set the stage\, and provide a case study from Delaware. \nMichael Cahill\, Germano & Cahill\, PC\nMike Parkowski\, Delaware Solid Waste Authority \n \n
