SUMMARY:Connecting Climate Change Mitigation with Materials\, Products\, & Waste
DESCRIPTION:This webinar provided an overview of how the life cycle of materials contributes to greenhouse gas emissions – and how materials management approaches\, including recycling\, composting\, and waste and pollution prevention\, and environmentally preferable procurement – offer significant opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Materials management is often underutilized in climate action plans because of how conventional greenhouse gas inventories treat these emissions\, and the presenters explained the importance of more comprehensive inventory approaches\, and how inventories can better reflect the emissions associated with materials – and emissions reduction potential of materials management. \nThe webinar also covered NEWMOA’s recently-released Climate-Waste Action Plan [PDF] and current initiatives underway to implement this Plan.

SUMMARY:2009 Mercury Science & Policy Conference with a Special Focus on the Great Lakes & Northeast Regions
DESCRIPTION:Organized & Sponsored by:\nEPA & NEWMOA \nObjectives of the Conference \n\nProvide current information on human health\, environmental\, and ecological research findings pertaining to mercury in addition to associated policy activities\nProvide a forum for evaluating advancements in reducing mercury releases\nProvide a forum for discussing the scientific and public health basis for policy actions to effectively address mercury risks\nFacilitate an exchange on the cross media technical\, policy\, and management issues pertaining to mercury\nIdentify high priority areas for future cost effective mercury reduction activities and strategies\nIdentify high priority areas for future research needed to inform policy and management decisions\n\nThe overall purpose of the Conference was to connect current scientific research findings with policy with balance in perspectives and without bias toward any point of view. In this context\, policy refers to government policy as reflected in federal\, state\, or local government actions that include legislative\, regulatory\, voluntary\, and educational efforts. In general\, the scientific research focused on applied rather than basic research\, unless the basic science was important to understanding critical issues and questions. Conference session topics targeted priority topics and issues of special interest in the Great Lakes or Northeast Regions. \nParticipants \n\nFederal\, state\, provincial\, tribal\, and local environmental and public health officials\nPolicy makers and elected officials\nAcademic and government researchers\nNon-governmental and community organizations\nIndustry representatives\nLabor organization representatives\n\nGeographic Focus \nThe Conference was designed to target participation from the geographic area covered by the following States and provinces: Connecticut\, Illinois\, Indiana\, Maine\, Massachusetts\, Michigan\, Minnesota\, New Hampshire\, New York\, New Jersey\, Ohio\, Rhode Island\, Pennsylvania\, Wisconsin\, and Vermont; New Brunswick\, Newfoundland\, Nova Scotia\, Ontario\, Prince Edward Island\, and Quebec.

SUMMARY:Safer Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this webinar was to provide an overview of the States Alternatives Assessment Wiki. This wiki has been developed by an ad hoc group of state environmental agency staff under the leadership of Pam Eliason\, Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI)\, University of Massachusetts Lowell. \nThe intent of the Safer Alternatives Wiki site is to create a set of flexible\, adaptive steps that follow a shared understanding of what constitutes an evaluation of potentially safer alternatives to a chemical of concern. The goal is not to dictate precisely how to conduct the assessment\, but rather to lay out basic steps generally agreed upon\, and to provide a set of resources to draw from when an alternatives assessment is performed. The Wiki is being developed collaboratively by members of agencies and organizations from the following states: \n\nCalifornia\nConnecticut\nIllinois\nMaine\nMassachusetts\nMichigan\nMinnesota\nNew York\nOregon\nWashington\n\nThe States Alternatives Assessment Protocol Wiki is designed to provide guidance\, examples\, and resources for states interested in conducting or promoting alternatives assessments. \nSpeaker: Pam Eliason\, TURI. Pam demonstrated the user interface\, navigation\, and content of the Wiki. The webinar included time for questions and discussion about the development of the Wiki\, what’s left to be done\, and its relationship to the work of the IC2.

SUMMARY:Western Maine Ag Plastics Recycling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Disposable plastics are now integral to most farm operations in all sectors of agriculture. Plastics are replacing glass\, metal\, concrete\, and ceramic because they cost less\, increase production efficiency\, and are safer. Disposal\, however\, is an unsolved problem. Some waste plastics are burned in open fires on-farm\, plowed into fields\, or pushed out of the way in piles. When burned\, they can release dioxins and other pollutants\, which then can enter the food system at the base of the food chain. When left in the field\, plastics pose risks to livestock\, create mosquito breeding habitat\, and are an ugly detriment to agri-tourism. Recycling is rare\, but new opportunities are emerging. \nFunded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, NEWMOA conducted training and provided technical assistance to promote proper management and recycling of agricultural plastics in rural areas of northern New England and New York. NEWMOA contracted with Dr. Lois Levitan\, Program Leader of the Cornell Recycling Agriculture Plastics Project\, for technical expertise on all aspects of the project. NEWMOA conducted a workshop for western Maine participants on Tuesday\, April 14\, 2009 at the Granary Restaurant in Farmington\, ME. The workshop included talks on the status of agricultural film plastics management and recycling; guidelines for handling of plastics to prepare for proper management and recycling; infrastructure and equipment needs; and markets.
