SUMMARY:Carbon Footprint Assessments - What & Why: Session 1
DESCRIPTION:This first session covered the “what” and “why” of conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory or carbon footprint analysis. In addition\, the session provided key concepts and resources to support the business case for climate action and the importance of good analysis as a springboard for climate action. \nIntroduction – 10 min.\nPresenter: Michelle Gaither\, Environmental Engineer\, PPRC\nMs. Gaither has an M.S. in Environmental Science and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. The two disciplines complement each other in identifying and addressing pollution prevention opportunities for industry. Recently\, Ms. Gaither acquired her certificate of proficiency in three courses of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute’s E-Learning program: Introduction to Carbon Markets; Basics of Organizational GHG Accounting; and Basics of Project-Level GHG Accounting. \nGreenhouse Gas Inventory Purpose\, Concepts\, & Tools – 1 hr. 5 min.\nPresenter: Josh Skov\, Principal and Co-founder\, Good Company\nMr. Skov supports clients with the development of sustainability indicators and assessment tools in addition to climate change and greenhouse gas inventory methodology. SUMMARY:Conducting Carbon Footprint Assessments
DESCRIPTION:This three part webinar series covered the basics of greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting for annual inventories and reduction projects\, why and how businesses and institutions are going through the process\, and what tools are helping them along the way. Participants were encouraged to participate in the full series: \nThursday\, April 28th\nSession 1: Carbon Footprint Assessments – What & Why\nThe first session covered the “what” and “why” of conducting a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory or carbon footprint analysis. In addition\, the session provided key concepts and resources to support the business case for climate action and the importance of good analysis as a springboard for climate action. \nThursday\, May 12th\nSession 2: Carbon Footprints Step-by-Step\nThe second session introduced participants to the protocols and standards used for conducting a greenhouse gas emissions inventory. It also covered the process for conducting an inventory or accounting for GHG reduction projects\, as well as existing calculators\, tools\, various registries and their validation and reporting requirements\, and available resources. \nThursday\, June 2nd\nSession 3: Case Studies of Carbon Footprinting\nThe third session focused on case studies of industries and organizations that have gone through greenhouse gas inventory exercises\, including lessons learned from establishing a baseline\, setting GHG reduction goals\, and working toward meeting those goals. \nThese webinars were brought to you by NEWMOA and the Northwest Pollution Prevention Resouce Center (PPRC) with funding support from the Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange (P2Rx).

SUMMARY:NEWMOA's Sustainable Hospitality Metrics Project
DESCRIPTION:NEWMOA led a Sustainable Hospitality Metrics Project as part of an overall effort of the Pollution Prevention Research Exchange (P2Rx) to advance sustainable hospitality efforts. Phase 1 of this project involved developing a series of formulas for calculating environmental outcomes from sustainable hospitality practices. The draft document\, “From Behavior Change to Environmental Outcomes in Sustainable Hospitality: Metrics\, Formulas\, Variables\, & Assumptions\,” represented the culmination of this work. \nThe purpose of the webinar was to review comments received on the draft document and discuss any unresolved issues and next steps. \nThis webinar was made possible with funding support from the Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange (P2Rx).

SUMMARY:Connecting Climate Change Mitigation with Materials\, Products\, & Waste
DESCRIPTION:This webinar provided an overview of how the life cycle of materials contributes to greenhouse gas emissions – and how materials management approaches\, including recycling\, composting\, and waste and pollution prevention\, and environmentally preferable procurement – offer significant opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Materials management is often underutilized in climate action plans because of how conventional greenhouse gas inventories treat these emissions\, and the presenters explained the importance of more comprehensive inventory approaches\, and how inventories can better reflect the emissions associated with materials – and emissions reduction potential of materials management. \nThe webinar also covered NEWMOA’s recently-released Climate-Waste Action Plan [PDF] and current initiatives underway to implement this Plan.
