SUMMARY:Managing Unused Latex Paint Workshop: Focusing on Options for Rural Communities in Maine
DESCRIPTION:Proposed Workshop Agenda \nPlease note: These meetings were designed to be as interactive as possible and we encouraged audience feedback and participation throughout the events. \nWelcome & Introductions\nRachel Smith & Jennifer Griffith\, NEWMOA \nThe Problem with Managing Latex Paint in Maine\nFerg Lea\, AVCOG \n\nThis introduction “set the stage” for why managing leftover “waste” paint is an issue in Maine – especially for rural communities. The remainder of the workshop focused on possible actions for communities\, including: prevention through consumer education\, facilitating local reuse through latex paint exchanges\, and participating in a paint recycling program.\n\nPreventing Waste Paint\nRachel Smith\, NEWMOA \n\nThis session focused on preventing the generation of waste paint and discussed educational messages that local retailers\, solid waste programs\, and others can use to encourage customers and residents to purchase the correct amount of paint.\n\nCase Studies of Paint Drop & Swaps\nJennifer Griffith\, NEWMOA \n\nThis session provided some examples of communities that have successfully implemented latex paint exchanges (aka drop and swaps) to facilitate the reuse of usable latex paint among residents.\n\nRecycling Paint\nIda Arabshahi\, PaintCare \n\nThe law that provides for the paint manufacturing industry to pay for paint recycling became effective July 2 of this year. This session will be a preliminary discussion of how the paint manufacturers’ association\, PaintCare\, will help fund town and retailer collection and recycling programs – anticipated to begin in July 2015.\n\nQuestions\, Feedback\, and Discussion \nMeeting Adjourned

SUMMARY:Managing Unused Latex & Architectural Paint Workshop: Focusing on Options for Rural Communities in Vermont
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Agenda \nPlease note: This meeting was designed to be as interactive as possible and encourage audience feedback and participation throughout the event. \n6:00pm Welcome & Introductions\nRachel Smith\, NEWMOA\nJim O’Gorman\, Rutland Co. Solid Waste District \n\nBuffet dinner provided by Gill’s Grinders.\n\n6:30pm The Problem with Managing Paint in Vermont\nCathy Jamieson\, VT DEC \n\nThis introduction “set the stage” for why managing leftover “waste” paint is an issue in Vermont – especially for rural communities. The remainder of the workshop focused on possible actions for communities\, including: prevention through consumer education and participating in a paint recycling program.\n\n6:45pm Preventing Waste Paint\nRachel Smith and Jennifer Griffith\, NEWMOA \n\nThis session focused on preventing the generation of waste paint and discuss educational messages that local retailers\, solid waste programs\, and others can use to encourage customers and residents to purchase the correct amount of paint. NEWMOA is developing outreach materials as part of this effort and got feedback from participants on these documents.\n\n7:30pm Recycling Paint\nMarjaneh Zarrehparvar\, PaintCare \n\nThis session covered information on Vermont’s recently passed product stewardship law for paint recycling – Act 58 – which requires the paint industry to be responsible for collecting and managing leftover architectural paint in the state. PaintCare\, a non-profit organization established to implement paint stewardship programs has set up programs in Oregon\, California\, and Connecticut. The success of these programs was discussed\, as well the process to get the Vermont program up and running by spring 2014.\n\n8:00pm Questions & Feedback / Group Discussion \n8:30pm Meeting Adjourned

SUMMARY:Chemical Use Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:For a number of years\, companies\, and advocates have been calling for greater transparency in the information available on the use of chemicals in products. In response\, some state environmental agencies have begun to require reporting on chemical use in certain products and to publish the available data. The Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse (IC2) held a “Chemical Use Disclosure” webinar to kick-off a series of discussions designed to help shape the future of these information resources. It featured presentations on: \n\nThe newly released Washington Department of Ecology online system for searching for information collected from manufacturers on the use of about 60 chemicals of high concern in children’s products; and\nThe Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction Clearinghouse (IMERC) online database covering the intentional use of mercury in products.\n\nThe IC2 has posted a PDF version of the presentation and made a video of the webinar and follow-up discussion available on NEWMOA’s YouTube channel here . \nThis initiative is made possible with funding support from the John Merck Fund and participation from the BizNGO Network and the GC3.

SUMMARY:Documenting P2 Program Activities & Getting Outcomes: Updates to the P2 & Compliance Assistance Metrics Database Software
DESCRIPTION:Andy Bray provided an overview of recent upgrades to the “Pollution Prevention and Compliance Assistance Metrics Database Software.” \nThis Microsoft Access-based database software application contains features for tracking program activities including: \n\nWorking one-on-one with clients (such as on-site visits and research)\nProducing educational and outreach materials\nSponsoring workshops and training events\nResponding to information requests\n\nThe database application also tracks the outcomes associated with many of these program activities\, including environmental\, behavioral\, and economic outcomes. Because each state’s pollution prevention and compliance assistance program is somewhat different in the scope of its activities and its structure\, the software can be customized so that programs can use only those components and the level of detail that suit their needs. \nFor more information\, visit: Pollution Prevention & Assistance Tracker (P2@) Software
