SUMMARY:NEWMOA's Sustainable Hospitality Metrics Project
DESCRIPTION:NEWMOA led a Sustainable Hospitality Metrics Project as part of an overall effort of the Pollution Prevention Research Exchange (P2Rx) to advance sustainable hospitality efforts. Phase 1 of this project involved developing a series of formulas for calculating environmental outcomes from sustainable hospitality practices. The draft document\, “From Behavior Change to Environmental Outcomes in Sustainable Hospitality: Metrics\, Formulas\, Variables\, & Assumptions\,” represented the culmination of this work. \nThe purpose of the webinar was to review comments received on the draft document and discuss any unresolved issues and next steps. \nThis webinar was made possible with funding support from the Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange (P2Rx).

SUMMARY:Connecting Climate Change Mitigation with Materials\, Products\, & Waste
DESCRIPTION:This webinar provided an overview of how the life cycle of materials contributes to greenhouse gas emissions – and how materials management approaches\, including recycling\, composting\, and waste and pollution prevention\, and environmentally preferable procurement – offer significant opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Materials management is often underutilized in climate action plans because of how conventional greenhouse gas inventories treat these emissions\, and the presenters explained the importance of more comprehensive inventory approaches\, and how inventories can better reflect the emissions associated with materials – and emissions reduction potential of materials management. \nThe webinar also covered NEWMOA’s recently-released Climate-Waste Action Plan [PDF] and current initiatives underway to implement this Plan.

SUMMARY:Safer Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this webinar was to provide an overview of the States Alternatives Assessment Wiki. This wiki has been developed by an ad hoc group of state environmental agency staff under the leadership of Pam Eliason\, Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI)\, University of Massachusetts Lowell. \nThe intent of the Safer Alternatives Wiki site is to create a set of flexible\, adaptive steps that follow a shared understanding of what constitutes an evaluation of potentially safer alternatives to a chemical of concern. The goal is not to dictate precisely how to conduct the assessment\, but rather to lay out basic steps generally agreed upon\, and to provide a set of resources to draw from when an alternatives assessment is performed. The Wiki is being developed collaboratively by members of agencies and organizations from the following states: \n\nCalifornia\nConnecticut\nIllinois\nMaine\nMassachusetts\nMichigan\nMinnesota\nNew York\nOregon\nWashington\n\nThe States Alternatives Assessment Protocol Wiki is designed to provide guidance\, examples\, and resources for states interested in conducting or promoting alternatives assessments. \nSpeaker: Pam Eliason\, TURI. Pam demonstrated the user interface\, navigation\, and content of the Wiki. The webinar included time for questions and discussion about the development of the Wiki\, what’s left to be done\, and its relationship to the work of the IC2.

SUMMARY:Regional Workshop on Chemicals in Commerce: Using Data on High Production Volume (HPV) Chemicals
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Sponsors/Organizors:\nPresented by the EPA Region 4; EPA Office of Pollution Prevention & Toxics; NEWMOA \nOverview:\nThe Workshop covered the EPA’s High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge Program and described various new and interesting data use projects and initiatives\, including efforts related to green chemistry. The session included a description of the HPV Information System (HPVIS)\, a publicly available database of physical\, environmental\, and toxicity information regarding many HPV chemicals. Presenters demonstrated HPVIS’ searching capabilities and new enhancements\, including hazard characterizations that summarize collective data for HPV chemicals. In addition\, the session provided an update on the status of the REACH program in Europe\, and efforts underway in Canada to prioritize chemicals for action. The Workshop ended with a discussion about possible follow-up initiatives in EPA Region 4. \nWorkshop Goals: \n\nEducate stakeholders about the EPA High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge Program\, as well as other sources of chemical toxicity and environmental information\nShare experiences about the use of HPV chemicals data\nDevelop ideas on how agencies and programs in EPA Region 4 can use this data\n\nTopics: \n\nSources of publicly available HPV chemical toxicity and environmental data\, including EPA’s HPV information system\nData applications\nData research and analysis\nInterpretation of data\nUse of chemical toxicity data for green chemistry\nInternational HPV chemical data efforts\n\nWho Attended? \n\nFederal\, state\, tribal\, and local environmental and public health officials\nAcademic researchers\nNon-governmental and community organizations\nIndustry representatives
