The results of these studies can be a powerful tool to drive policy priorities and legislative action. Also\, recent EPA funding has allowed states who haven’t historically funded waste characterization studies to conduct them for the first time. \nWhat is a waste characterization study? What do they tell us? How do they get all that data? Why is it an important tool for states? How are they used? Join us as a leading expert and seasoned state agency officials explain waste characterization studies and provide real world policy stemming from the results. \nJohn Culbertson is a Principal of MSW Consultants\, a management consulting firm specializing in recycling\, organics\, and waste management. With 31 years of industry experience\, John has designed\, performed and managed waste characterization studies from Alaska to Maine to the Florida Keys and everywhere in between. \nJohn Fischer is Deputy Division Director for Solid Waste at the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). \nDavid McLaughlin is a Program Services Officer at the State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management focused on sustainability initiatives for materials management\, renewable energy\, and prevention pollution. \nVIEW PRESENTATION SLIDES [PDF] \n \n

DESCRIPTION:You may have been hearing about chemical recycling as a bold new approach to recycling plastics. What are the types of “chemical recycling” and how do they work? Will they help us toward a circular economy\, or not? How will states need to approach regulating them?
