Solid Waste Program Solid Waste Projects Commercial Paper Recycling

NEWMOA's overall goal for the Northeast Commercial Paper Recycling Project is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions tied to the manufacturer, transport, and disposal of paper generated by commercial facilities. The Association plans to achieve this goal by:

  • Working with stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and implement regional strategies to increase collection and recycling
  • Encouraging the increased use of recycled paper by paper mills in the region and other domestic end-users

See Project Background for more information on the connection between GHG emissions and paper and the origins of the Project.

NEWMOA formed a Commercial Paper Recycling Workgroup that includes representatives from the northeast states' recycling, solid waste, and economic development programs, EPA Regions 1 and 2, and the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) to oversee the Project.

In the first phase of the Project, NEWMOA held a Commercial Paper Recycling Stakeholder Summit to gather ideas for significantly increasing commercial paper recycling by generators. The Commercial Waste Paper Recycling Workgroup is using the results of the Summit [PDF] to plan follow-up activities.
