Welcome to the first issue of NEWMOA's newly redesigned and enhanced Northeast Pollution Prevention & Sustainability News (formerly Northeast Assistance & Pollution Prevention News).  The content remains focused on federal, state, and local government efforts in the Northeast to advance sustainability, pollution prevention (P2), and compliance.  We have changed the name to reflect a greater emphasis on sustainability in the work of our members and EPA.  We hope that you like the new e-delivery format, navigation, and name, and we encourage you to send us your comments and suggestions so that we can continue to make improvements.  You can also share the newsletter with your friends and colleagues by using the Facebook, Linked-in, Twitter, and email buttons.

Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (VT DEC)

Environmental Excellence Awards
Applications for the 20th annual Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence will be accepted through January 25, 2013.  Winners will be recognized at the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility annual conference in May.

For more information, contact Gary Gulka.

Recycling Fluorescent Lamps
VT DEC is overseeing implementation of a manufacturer-funded fluorescent lamp recycling program with collection at municipal and retail locations.  The Program began in July and is open to residents, commercial facilities, and institutions.  Users can recycle any number of compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), or ten or fewer of other general purpose fluorescent lamps per visit.  There are approximately 80 retail collection locations, and many VT municipal solid waste districts and alliances have signed up for the Program.  VT DEC is working with Efficiency Vermont to educate retailers and expects more to join by the end of the year.

For more information, contact Gary Gulka.

Business Partnerships
The Vermont Business Environmental Partnership (VBEP) has over 200 members in its general business and sector specific programs for marinas, golf courses, restaurants, and hotels.  VT DEC is collaborating with NEWMOA and other states to develop program standards and BMPs for a green grocer sector initiative for the coming year.

For more information, contact Gary Gulka.

Auto Salvage & Body Sectors
VT DEC has scheduled three workshops for the auto salvage sector in November to provide an overview of BMPs and new permitting requirements.  Permitting rules currently under development include mandatory attendance at annual environmental training events.  An environmental compliance and P2 guide for the auto body sector is being completed and once released statewide workshops will follow this winter and spring.
