Mercury-Added Products Database
Introduction
The IMERC Mercury-Added Products* Database presents information submitted to the IMERC-member states on the amount and purpose of mercury in consumer products. The database is intended to inform consumers, recyclers, policy makers, and others about:
- products that contain intentionally-added mercury
- the amount of mercury in a specific product
- the amount of mercury in a specific product line sold in the US in a given year
- manufacturers of mercury added products.
The information in this database was submitted through IMERC by or on behalf of product manufacturers in compliance with laws in the states of Connecticut, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. These notification requirements have been in effect for products manufactured or distributed beginning in January 2001. Information on these state specific mercury product notification requirements is available at the following websites:

The Notification forms and instructions that manufacturers or their designated trade group (reporting organizations) use to submit the data can be viewed at:
http://www.newmoa.org/prevention/mercury/imerc/notificationforms.cfm
Notification Forms submitted to IMERC are reviewed by a Notification Committee consisting of representatives from each participating state. Following approval by the Committee, the information from the Forms is entered into the database and sent out to the reporting organization for its review and concurrence. The information in the database is posted on this webpage following concurrence by the reporting organization.
Mercury-added Product Notifications that have not been approved are not included in this database. This information will be added to the database only after it has been reviewed for completeness by the IMERC Notification Committee. All hard copy Forms that are submitted to IMERC are available to the public. If database users have a question about or interest in information that may still be under review by the IMERC states and the reporting organizations and therefore is not yet posted in this database, contact IMERC at (617) 367-8558.
Using the Database
To access the database, select from the following options to learn about mercury in products by sector, manufacturer, or product category.
- Access a list of notifications sorted by sector, or product category.
- Search for product information by sector, manufacturer, product category, or mercury content.
Database Caveats
There are a number of important caveats to consider when viewing the information in the database:
-
The information presently available may not represent the entire universe of mercury-added products. IMERC continues to receive product Notifications and is in the process of reviewing these filings prior to adding this data to the database.
-
The database does not include products that were manufactured prior to the effective dates of applicable states' laws on mercury reduction.
-
Aggregated data for a given product category does not necessarily represent the total amount of mercury contributing to the waste stream for a given product line. Because there are filings that are still in the review process and there may be other manufacturers that may not have yet filed with IMERC, the information in the database should not be misconstrued to be 100% of the total mercury-added product universe.
-
Summing the total amounts of mercury across product categories may result in double counting the same mercury. The same mercury component may be reported on by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), the manufacturer that purchases that component and incorporates it into a larger product, and a distributor that makes that product available for sale in one of the IMERC states.
-
Reported data only includes mercury that is in the product, and does not include mercury emitted during the mining and/or manufacturing process.

* A mercury-added product is a product, a commodity, a chemical, a product with one or more components, or a product that cannot function without the use of that component, that contains mercury or a mercury compound intentionally added to the product, commodity, chemical, or component in order to provide a specific characteristic, appearance, or quality, or to perform a specific function, or for any other reason. These products include formulated mercury-added products and fabricated mercury-added products.
