Marina Initiative

Environmental Protection Agency - Region 1

| Project Description |
EPA Region 1-New England Office of Assistance continues to work closely with state agency partners, marine trade association officials, and other relevant organizations in all states to discuss plans for outreach and compliance assessment effort for marinas. This integrated effort is designed to address such issues as management of storm water, oil and fuel, and waste. To accomplish these desired results, the EPA is developing a variety of assistence tools such as marina guidance manuals, a regional website, and marina owner training workshops.
To help determine the results of this initiative, EPA Region 1-NE is using a statistically valid measurement approach. Both before and after the assistance is provided, EPA is conducting on-site assessment visits of approximately 75 randomly selected marinas. The process features a walk through with the owner using a specially designed checklist to collect information on how each marina is doing in selected environmental areas. The measurement process will provide aggregate results of the assistance and more knowledge about the sector and measurement methods.
On March 30, 2006, a Regional Marina Meeting was held at the EPA Region 1-NE Lab to discuss some of the most critical issues facing New England's marinas. Agenda topics included pressure washing, hazardous waste management, and the implementation of Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans. To help marinas comply with and go beyond compliance, the following programs and resources were also featured: NEWMOA's Marina Workgroup, ME DEP's best management practices manual for marinas and boatyards, and the state Clean Marina Programs. |
