| Project Description |
In 2006, the New Hampshire Pollution Prevention Program (NHPPP) introduced an initiative, NH Green Slopes, to target environmental outreach efforts to New Hampshire ski slopes.
Seven New Hampshire ski facilities and resorts used biodiesel for the 2007 - 2008 ski season. Collectively, these ski areas purchased 296,600 gallons of biodiesel. Two of the locations have switched their entire resort operation to biodiesel. Upon switching fuels, these facilities reduced emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC), particulate organic matter (POM), and carbon monoxide (CO).
Nine ski facilities signed up for Anti-Idling Campaigns. On average the ski areas typically have 20 buses that idle all day from 9am-3pm. If all of these buses were prohibited from idling, the estimated combined reduced emissions would be 88 pounds of PM, 3,214 pounds of NOx, and 226,914 pounds of CO2.
The magnitude and diversity of services and operations at ski areas create a multifaceted environmental impact for most ski areas that include chemical use, energy consumption and related air pollution, and solid and hazardous waste generations.
NHPPP created a chart showing the environmental initiatives at each ski area to promote a healthy competition and to generate conversations among the facilities on how to implement each initiative. |
