| Project Description |
As a result and request of those who attended the medical device focus group meeting held summer 2004, OTA is planning a Design for the Environment workshop for the medical device sector in spring 2005. The Design for the Environment (DfE) program is one of the U.S. EPA's premier partnership programs, working with individual industry sectors to compare and improve the performance and human health and environmental risks and costs of existing and alternative products, processes, and practices. The DfE workshop will involve manufacturers of the following three types of medical devices: surgical and medical instruments; electro-medical and electrotherapeutic apparatuses; and surgical appliances and supplies; as well as companies in their supply chains and product designers.
The medical device manufacturing industry is a significant contributor to the Massachusetts economy. This sector includes approximately 217 manufacturing establishments with 20,365 employees, a payroll of $1.2 billion, and shipments valued at $5.0 billion. The industry was a stabilizing influence on the Massachusetts' economy during the difficult economic times over the last few years. The industry's growth offers a unique opportunity for good wages and professional growth for employees as well as to provide revenue for communities and the state. |
