| Project Description |
In an effort to improve environmental performance, EPA NE has established the "Green Team" and initiated an EMS for its Boston office and Chelmsford laboratory. In October 2002, the EMS Team prioritized environmental aspects and impacts for EPA facilities, and the Green Team submitted action plans for the following project areas: public transit, fleets, printers, environmentally preferable purchasing, "green" meetings, employee education, mail rooms, and internet/web development. In November and December 2002, the EMS Team assessed the Green Team environmental action plans and developed EMS objectives, targets, and management plans.
On July 12, 2004, the EPA Boston office EMS Team and the EMS Board of Directors held the first EMS Management Review. This process completed the first full cycle of the EMS development process. Now the EMS moves into the continuing improvement stage and preparation for a formal EMS audit and certification by EPA Headquarters. In preparation for this, the EMS Team and the Green Team will be working over the next few months to make improvements to the EMS as recommended by internal auditors. These improvements will include updating the EMS policy; reviewing the list of significant environmental impacts; updating EMS goals and objectives; and reviewing and verifying operational controls, compliance, and communication and awareness programs. |
