To help colleges and universities (C/Us) implement best management practices (BMPs), EPA NE is planning to co-sponsor a regional workshop in 2003 and make presentations at existing workshops. The presentations will promote a BMP Catalogue and will encourage C/Us to submit additional case studies to be incorporated into it. The workshop will focus on environmental sustainability topics such as: waste minimization; micro-scale chemistry; recycling; End-of-Life Electronics; green building, and implementing an EMS. EPA will coordinate with state assistance programs (MA EOEA) and non-profit organizations to include issues such as environmentally preferable purchasing (EPP) and Green Building.
There are 176 college and university facilities participating in an EPA Region 1-New England self-audit program. Approximately 168 audits have been reviewed, and 89 final determinations have been made. EPA's contractor, Industrial Economics, will conduct a telephone survey of colleges and universities that participated in the Audit Initiative to assess its impact. The Region was collecting and editing 14 case studies that were included in the colleges and universities BMP catalogue; the final product was expected in May 2003.
EPA Region 1-New England's web site now features a Best Management Practices (BMP) Catalog for colleges and universities. The BMP Catalog includes 16 case studies that illustrate different approaches to promoting environmental projects at institutions of higher education. The Catalog answers such basic questions as "How do I get started?" and "What are the potential cost savings?". |
