CT Hospital Environmental Roundtable

Organization(s) Connecticut Dept. of Environmental Protection
Project Description Based on a strategic assessment of needs conducted cooperatively with EPA in 2003, DEP is partnering with Hartford Hospital and Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) to assist Connecticut hospitals in preventing pollution. The Connecticut Hospital Environmental Roundtable (CHER) was formed. The Roundtable will provide opportunities for hospitals to learn from each other by sharing ideas, presenting success stories, keeping up-to-date on available resources, and discussing environmental issues that affect the health care industry. The group meets quarterly at different host facilities. Meetings are half-day and are hosted by hospitals or other organizations. The kick-off event was held at Hartford Hospital in April 2004, with approximately 45 participants representing over 20 hospitals, indicating interest in this effort. The topic was "How Hospitals Can Cut Costs and Reap Additional Benefits through Responsible Waste Management." Mike Tortora from Hartford Hospital spoke about what they have done to significantly cut waste management costs and how other hospitals can implement these proven solutions to save money, comply with regulatory requirements, and prevent pollution. H2E staff presented an overview of their organization and how they can assist hospitals in their waste reduction efforts, and Janet Bowen of EPA Region 1-NE talked about the agency's recent hospital environmental assessments.

The University of Connecticut Health Center hosted a worshop on April 4, 2006 entitled "Everything You Need to Know about "Green" Construction and Demolition". The workshop was designed to give facility managers and healthcare construction project planners information to understand what job site recycling is all about, to address the objections that are raised to recycling, and to begin planning to recycle during their own projects.
