| Project Description |
Backyard burning of domestic waste is an important challenge in the overall efforts to control dioxin in the Northeast. The Northeast state environmental agencies are interested in working together to explore effective ways to reduce this source of dioxin emissions in the region. In 2003, NEWMOA initiated a joint project with its sister organization, Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM), to begin to address this problem in the region.
The goals of this project are to facilitate and coordinate the northeast states' activities to:
-Understand the scope and nature of barrel burning in the Northeast
-Assess solid waste capacity and costs associated with alternatives to waste burning
-Develop consistent assistance and enforcement actions in the region to promote compliance with regulations
-Develop and implement effective public outreach campaigns throughout the region
-Coordinate with other EPA regional offices (beyond EPA Regions 1 and 2) to develop education and outreach materials
The two interstate organizations developed a joint resolution, Don't Trash Our Air: A Joint Resolution Promoting Interstate Cooperation to Reduce Air Pollution from Open Burning of Solid Waste, which was signed by the Northeast State Environmental Commissioners and EPA Regions 1-NE and 2 Administrators during fall 2004. |
