| Project Description |
Connecticut's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) registered project has been completed. The Mark Twain Museum Center in Hartford is the first such project completed in Connecticut and the first museum to build green in the country. In celebration and as a kick-off for this year's Earth Week activities, an event honoring the Mark Twain Museum Center was held on April 19th, 2004. The event included an awards ceremony featuring the U.S. Green Building Council, CT Green Building Council, and the CT DEP; a panel discussion on "Building a Green Museum"; and building tours.
The LEED standards are a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. As of spring 2004, there were 11 LEED-registered projects in Connecticut, of which the Mark Twain Museum Center was the first to reach completion. Three college dormitories have been constructed at state colleges that are expected to earn the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Students at Western, Eastern, and Southern CT State Universities are now housed in these buildings. A science laboratory and classroom building are also under construction at the Western and Eastern campuses that will meet LEED standards. Late spring 2005 is the anticipated completion date. |
