Composting Training and Results

Organization(s) Environmental Protection Agency - Region 2
RCAP Solutions
Project Description A grant from EPA Region 2 enabled RCAP Solutions to partner with the US VI Department of Agriculture and the University of VI Cooperative Extension Service to educate and train 84 trainers in backyard composting techniques and processes. Each trainer in turn made a commitment to train at least two other people how to compost. In all, 220 compost bins and thermometers were distributed.

Each participant was given a log to record the type and quantity of materials put into the composter. This log was collected after three months and quantities extrapolated to figure how much waste was diverted from landfills and how many of the compost bins were still in use.

One hundred percent of the bins distributed were still being used after three months. The average household size using the bins was 2.76 people, and the average amound of food and yard waste diverted weekly was 11.2 pounds. If these rates are sustained by all those who were trained, over 66 tons of waste will be diverted from landfills.
