| Project Description |
The New York Academy of Sciences is working to identify environmentally sound and feasible pollution prevention (P2) strategies for dioxins entering the NY/NJ harbor. This project is part of a larger program to identify P2 strategies for five different contaminants: mercury, cadmium, PCBs, dioxins, and PAHs. Part of the funding for this project comes from EPA Region 2.
The P2 strategies will include source reduction and waste minimization practices for various sectors of the regional economy. They will also identify best implementation approaches (regulatory, education campaigns, eommunity outreach, etc.). In order to make its recommendations, the Academy of Sciences is conducting research into dioxin sources in the harbor and meeting with Dioxin Action Group, a group of dioxin and policy experts. The Academy will publish a final report in fall 2005. |
