| Project Description |
EPA Region 2 has awarded the W. Averell Harriman School of Management, State University of New York at Stony Brook a grant to conduct an analysis of energy/electricity load management strategies and energy conservation programs.
A reference energy system was first established, describing current energy sources - coal, oil, natural gas, hydroelectricity - and their links to distribution and use - air conditioning, lighting, heating, etc. An energy-environment-economic system analysis model is being developed based on the reference system. This new model will be used to assess and compare Energy Star building and technology programs, urban heat island mitigation efforts, green and reflective roof projects, and LEED programs. Both direct and indirect contributions of these efforts will be examined. In addition to energy use, water use, solid waste production, hazardous waste production, mercury use, and air pollution production will be analyzed. The hope is that this analysis will enable more cost-effective, environmentally-sound conservation efforts. |
