| Project Description |
P2 staff worked with the House Science, Technology and Energy Committee to craft a bill (HB 366) that would prohibit the sale of most mercury-added measuring devices, switches, and thermostats (similar to legislation already passed in Maine). The bill was passed out of committee 10-1 and then passed by the full House in January 2004. The bill is currently residing in the Senate, and a hearing will be scheduled in the near future. SB 373, a bill to ban the disposal of mercury-added products in landfills and incinerators (supported by NH DES) was also introduced in the 2004 session, but it was referred back to Committee where it will be worked on prior to the 2005 legislative session.
Under a re-licensing agreement for the 15 Mile Falls Dam, located on the upper Connecticut River, the states of NH and VT will each receive $150,000 for mercury reduction projects to be carried out in the watershed. NH will be focusing its efforts on school clean-outs, elemental mercury collections from dental offices, and a dairy manometer collection program. These projects will begin in spring of 2004, when DES receives the funds. |
