Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling

Erie County Office of Pollution Prevention, New York

| Project Description |
The County continues to assist municipalities and businesses in recycling C&D debris. Examples of recent projects include:
- Erie County Youth Detention Facility: The County Department of Environment & Planning worked with Site Managers from Sabre Demolition and Ciminelli Construction to recycle steel, brick and concrete from the demolition of detention facility. As of Summer 1999, 1500 cubic yards of brick and concrete and 100 tons of steel have been recycled. In addition, by incorporating high reuse salvage items into the design of the new detention facility, the County saved money on the purchase of those items.
- Roswell Park Cancer Institute: Through its C&D Debris Recycling Project, Erie County worked with Ontario Specialty Contracting to coordinate recycling of brick and concrete rubble from demolition work thereby diverting the debris from local landfills.
- City of Buffalo Housing Demolition Project: County staff have been working with the City of Buffalo in tracking wastes from dilapidated housing demolitions. Materials recovered include high salvage material (i.e., fireplaces, woodwork, metal), wood, concrete, and soil. Although quantifying the amount is difficult, ECOPP received figures from Modern Disposal C&D Processing for 2000 tons. |
