Cleaning Solvent Alternative

Organization(s) Connecticut Dept. of Environmental Protection
Project Description Through a PPIS grant, CONNSTEP, Inc. was able to assist a client with the selection of an alternative cleaning solvent. The client had been using a 50/50 mixture of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and lacquer thinner to remove paint from stencils, shields, and paint gun tips. The cleaning mixture was used at a rate of 2,420 gallons/year at an annual cost of $12,131. In addition, the client needed to find ways to reduce VOC emissions at their facility. CONNSTEP, Inc. conducted research to identify suitable cleaning alternatives and provided the client with a list of contacts at companies that were willing to supply free testing samples of their cleaning products.
