Useful Waste Site Investigation and Remediation Information

If you know of a helpful website that is not listed, please let us know about it!

EPA Triad Resource Center - http://www.triadcentral.org

This website describes the "Triad" method, an innovative approach to decision-making for hazardous waste site characterization and remediation. The site is divided into the following sections help the user understand and implement the approach:

  • Triad Overview
  • Triad Management
  • Regulatory Information
  • Technical Components
  • User Experiences
  • References/Resources

From the website, you can also sign up to receive updates and announcements from the Triad Resource Center.

EPA REACH IT - http://www.epareachit.org

This website contains excellent information and searching capabilities to help determine innovative site characterization and remediation technologies that might be appropriate for a given situation. The site combines the information from three established EPA databases: Vendor Information System for Innovative Treatment Technologies (VISITT), Vendor Field Analytical and Characterization Technologies System (Vendor FACTS), and Innovative Treatment Technologies (ITT).

  • in the Search Remediation Technologies section, you can search remediation technologies by technology type, contaminant type, media, and/or scale of project. An advanced search will enable you to search by technology trade and vendor names, types of sites where the technology was used, and/or specific sites where the technology was used. Results are displayed in a list with each technology paired with its vendor - excellent summaries are obtained by selecting technologies from the list.
  • in the Search Site Characterization Technologies section, you can search characterization technologies by technology type, contaminant type, media, and/or scale of project. An advanced search option is also available. As with the remediation technologies, excellent summaries are obtained by selecting from the list.

EPA CLU-IN - http://www.clu-in.org

This is a master website containing links to hundreds of websites relating to waste site cleanup. For instance, you can link to the FRTR and REACH IT websites described above from serveral areas of CLU-IN. CLU-IN is a good place to visit to keep up-to-date. The site is organized into the following sections:

  • What's Hot? What's New?
  • Remediation
  • Characterization and Monitoring
  • Initiatives and Partnerships
  • Publications and Studio
  • Databases
  • TechDirect and Newsletters
  • Vendor and Developer Support
  • About CLU-IN

You can keep informed about training opportunities in the What's Hot? What's New? Section under the Upcoming Courses and Conferences bullet item. You can view and subscribe to useful newsletters on waste site cleanup technology developments, TechDirect, Technology News and Trends , and Technology Innovation News Survey, from the TechDirect and Newsletters section. You can subscribe to TechDirect, an excellent electronic newsletter when in the Tech Trends area or directly from the TechDirect menu item.

Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) - http://www.itrcweb.org

ITRC is a state-led coalition working together with industry and stakeholders to achieve regulatory acceptance of beneficial environmental technologies. The website offers information on trainings, documents, and conferences regarding a wide variety of technologies, contaminants of concern, and regulatory issues.

EPA ETV - http://www.epa.gov/etv

This website contains information about EPA's ETV program including all verification reports issued and technologies currently under evaluation. Knowing which technologies and vendors have completed the rigorous verification process can be helpful. Detailed evaluation reports and summaries can be downloaded. You can subscribe to ETVoice, an electronic newsletter from this website.

Federal Remediation Technology Roundtable (FRTR) - http://www.frtr.gov

This website contains excellent information on all types of site characterization and remediation technologies. The FRTR is a cooperative effort of the Departments of Defense, Energy, Interior; NASA; and EPA.

  • the Cost and Performance Case Studies section contains numerous good case studies with objective information. You can search for case studies by media and/or contaminant as well as by technology from convenient pull-down lists. The only potential drawback is that the information is limited to federal sites which are typically large projects.
  • use the Table of Contents button in the Remediation Screening Matrix section to get to excellent background information on many remediation technologies (established and innovative) as well as links to information about individual contaminants (i.e. toxicology and fate and transport). In addition, under the Screening Matrix button, this section contains a table summarizing all kinds of information about a long list of technologies.
  • use the Table of Content button in the Sampling and Analysis Matrix section to get to excellent background information on numerous types of sampling technologies and analysis methods. In addition, this section contains two matrices that summarize all kinds of information about a long list of technologies; one for sample collection methods and one for analytical methods.
